5 Plant-Based Comfort Foods

By Elyssa Goodman

There are foods we seek out to evoke a memory of childhood or times gone by, like family dinners, tailgating, or sick days at home. We lovingly call them comfort foods. If you’re maintaining a plant-based diet, you may think you can’t indulge in a serving (or two) of nostalgia.
But worry no more! While normally these foods are heavy on carbs, oil, and dairy, we’ve got five plant-based comfort foods that are sure to satisfy your cravings.

For when you’re feeling sick

Nothing tastes better than a bowl of soup when you’re under the weather. While chicken noodle soup certainly has memories tied to it, our turmeric carrot soup has actual healing powers. One of the best ways to combat the inflammation that comes with illness is with turmeric and all of its medicinal, antioxidant superfood goodness. And with a short prep time (only 35 minutes), you won’t have to wait long to let the healing begin.

For holiday gatherings

Being home for the holidays is all about tradition and hearty meals with the ones you love. Shepherd’s pie is a family classic, and we’ve kept the recipe’s generous helpings of Russet potato, known for its high protein and fiber content, but updated it with soy-based vegetable protein for a plant-happy twist.

For rainy (or snowy) days inside

When it’s too gross to go outside, it’s best to curl up inside under a blanket with a big bowl of pasta, especially one that’s full of family memories like mac and cheese. Our mac and cheese gets a veggie-friendly revival with a creamy sauce made from heart-healthy, fibrous butternut squash and silky tofu, not to mention some healthy vitamin (A, C, and K) additions from rainbow Swiss chard.

For your sweet tooth

If you’re craving chocolate to comfort you, it’s a lot easier than you think to indulge on a plant-based diet. Our raw chocolate brownies combine cocoa powder, almonds, walnuts, and dates for sweet, chewy treats you’ll turn to time and again. Bonus: cocoa powder is chock full of zinc, iron, manganese, and magnesium, all essential minerals for maintaining the body’s functions. That’s what we call delicious and nutritious.

For game time (or a binge-watching marathon)

When your team is about to hit the field, you need to fuel up with our perfect-for-a-crowd loaded sweet potato nachos. Turn the traditional, fried, oily variety on its head with our wholesome alternative. Bake sweet potato chips, that are full of vitamins and fiber. Then, score points with your guests by topping with tasty avocado salsa and chipotle crema. If you’re not into sports, try these nachos when you’re snuggling up in front of the TV for a full day of the new Netflix release—they’re just as easy to make for a serving of one or two.
